Value of a Suit

Suits are an Investment

The price of a wool suit will range from about $99.00 to more than $5,000.00. How do you determine the quality of a mens suit relative to price?

The two main components that determine the value of a mens suit are construction and cloth. You should also consider silhouette and design.

Before machines started replacing tailors, mens suits were graded from 1 to 6 in a system that specified the number of hand operations used to create the final product.

For instance, a number 1, the lowest grade of suit, was almost all machine-made.
A number 2 coat could use some handwork to finish the cuffs, collar, and buttons.
A number 3 had to have these three components finished by hand.
A number 6, the highest grade on the scale, was made almost entirely by hand.

Of course, some manufacturers would misrepresent these numbers in an attempt to sell their product at a higher quality rating than it deserved, but at least the system gave the retailer and consumer some sort of uniform standard.

With all the new technology in mens suit manufacturing, suit grading system does not apply like it did decades ago. However, generally speaking, this site describes the suit grading system as follows:

Cheap, fused (glued) front mens suits would fall between a one and three grade.

Moderately priced, off-the-rack mens suits, grade four.

Expensive, canvas front off-the-rack mens suits, grade five.

Made to measure canvas front mens suits, grade five.

Bespoke / bench-made canvas front mens suits, grade six.

This information is important when determining the value of a mens suit. Suits that fall between a one and three grade, made out of inferior materials with fused fronts, will over a period of time display a variety of problems shrinkages of the lining, puckering on front of coats and lapel roll line will not maintain its break point.

On the other hand, mens suits that fall between a five and six grade, made out of quality cloth, with stitched canvas fronts constructed by skilled craftsman will maintain its shape and fit for more than 10 years.

RECOMMENDATIONS

When searching for the right off the rack mens suit, stick with reputable labels.
Some of you, based on your physique, or your preference in mens suits will need custom tailored, made-to-measure mens suits.

When considering purchasing a low-cost off the rack mens suit, choose 100% wool with a traditional classic cut, designed with no more than three buttons.

One thing you must consider when making a choice between the least expensive mens suits is alterability. For an example low-cost mens suits only have 3/8 outlet in its seams, the man who gains ten pounds or more will find it impossible to have the coat let out. The finest ready-made mens suits are constructed with a least 7/8 outlet in its seams allowing coat to be let out if needed.
